Todmorden Schools' Tour 2012

Manasamitra on the Todmorden Schools’ Tour 2012

Each year Todmorden Town Council offers a gift of an artist visit to its seven primary schools.  This year the schools asked for a dance experience which reflected another culture.

We engaged the Yorkshire based South Asian Arts Company, Manasamitra to provide dance workshops in all the schools. To the delight of everyone taking part, a male dancer, Shrikant Subramaniam, led all the workshops for boys and girls.

Here’s what the children had to say about the experience:

“You won’t believe how much fun we had with Shrikant! Our class loved it. The girls tried on saris and the boys tried on turbans. And he put a red spot on everybody’s head and told us what different types of spots people have in India. So we are all saying thank you; we would never have known that we were such good Indian dancers without you!”  Walsden St Peter’s Primary School.

Impact for pupils:

  • learning new skills alongside a professional Indian dancer;
  • developing listening and observational skills;
  • learning something about the culture of India, its music and dance.

Impact for teachers:

  • a totally new experience to take part in dance from another culture.
